More than 20 people turned out to launch the 100th Sing Australia Choir in Kimba on Sunday evening.
Founder of Sing Australia, Colin Slater OAM returned to his birthplace Kimba to help establish a local choir.
Sing Australia is currently concentrating on establishing choirs in drought-affected SA as part of a Federal Government initiative.
There are no auditions to join Sing Australia community choirs. Rather they offer opportunities and a unique social environment, accepting that not everyone can sing in tune or read music. The only requirement is a desire to sing and enjoy yourself while acquiring skills for singing in a choral environment or simply for enjoyment in your own home.
Mr Slater said there are also huge benefits for people’s health and wellbeing through singing and the social connections of choirs. He said Sing Australia is based on the idea that everyone should be given the opportunity to sing in a welcoming and supportive environment. Representatives from choirs already in existence at Tumby Bay and Cummins attended the evening and the 101st choir was formed in Port Lincoln on Monday.
Mr Slater was born in Kimba and lived there for the first few years of his life and was very keen to have the milestone 100th choir formed there.
“We also plan to get choirs going in Cleve and Cowell in the next 12 months” said Mr Slater.
Kimba’s group meets every Monday night in the Uniting Church hall from 7pm to 8pm. For more information about Sing Australia in Kimba contact Margaret Mayfield or Beryl Cant or visit www.singaustralia.com.au
